Letters from or about Virginia congressmen, 1836-1842.

The collection contains a letter, 1836 February 17, James Garland, Washington, to William Massie, Tye River Mills, Va. concerning the establishment of a post office at Tye River Mills; and letter, 1838 April 5, Lettie Coles, Washington, to her daughter, Helen C. Coles, Charlotte Court House, Va., re the necessity of obeying parents and wearing sunbonnets. Also include a letter, 1840 December 28, George C. Dromgoole, Washington, to R.B. Robinson, Gaston, N.C., complaining about his farm manager Hawkins's failure to butcherhogs, and requesting Robinson to arrange the annual slave hiring. Also include a letter, 1842 July 8, Samuel L. Hays, Washington, to George C. Dromgoole concerning the forwarding of glasses and other personal matters and mentioning negotiations with England (the Webster-Ashburton treaty) and Whig intentions to block the tariff of 1842.

The Dromgoole family resided in Brunswick County, Va. Edward Dromgoole was a follower of John Wesley and a minister for sixty years, dying in 1835 at the age of 84. His son George C. Dromgoole served in the Virginia House of Delegates and State Senate. He also served in U.S. House of Representatives 1835-1841 and 1843-1847. A family member named Edward Dromgoole was a merchant and lawyer in Brunswick County and a person by that name served in the Virginia General Assembly, 1855-1858. ...
